This week we watched ‘Speed Racer’; a movie taken from a cartoon of the same name. The style of the movie closely matched the style of the cartoon, although incorporating an in-depth storyline to absorb audiences on a deeper level than possible in the cartoon, the overall visual effects and ideas remained true to the original concept.

Within the movie industry, there are five elements of the plot. Although not all movies are in the same genre or style, most movies generally follow a similar guideline for their plot. Within Speed Racer, the five elements are clearly present.

1) Speed Racer had a believable and sympathetic lead character, a young man named Speed Racer. The audience come to empathize with his plight during the film and want to see him win the Grand Prix.

2) There was an urgent and difficult problem present within the plot of Speed Racer, which was to clean up the racing industry in general. As well as added suspense about whether or not his brother was still alive, and finding out the truth.

3) There was the failed attempt to resolve the problem, as there usually is. By this stage, the main character, Speed Racer, gave up, having felt he had been beaten and not sure when he wanted to race anymore.

4) There is a crisis and then Speed Racer is offered a final chance to win the Grand Prix.

5) Within Speed Racer there was a successful resolution (however this part does not necessarily apply within all films as it has become popular in films today to make the final character lose or die to shock the audience). Speed Racer wins the Grand Prix, the bad guy is shamed and Speed Racer discovers what he races for.

Although using real people within Speed Racer, the special effects are remarkably unrealistic. Its popular, in modern film, to attempt to make a films special effects believable. Within Speed Racer, the colours and obstacles on the racing tracks are so unbelievably overdone that it reminds the audience of the futuristic era in which this is set. The Wachowski brothers have made other films with futuristic values, such as The Matrix. The Matrix is another film that scales the boundaries of reality and draws the audiences’ attention back to the fact that the actions depicted on screen are a physical impossibility. Both The Matrix and Speed Racer are different genres made within the same style by the Wachowski brothers.

My personal opinion is that ‘Brick’ is a far better quality movie than ‘Enter zombie king’ in all aspects of production. To use having a low budge as an excuse for a low grade film is lacking believability as both movies worked on a similar budget and produced very different results. ‘Brick’ managed to cast actors who had talent – plain and simple. Because many of the cast members have acted previously, they were probably drawn to the quality of the script, rather than the money. I couldn’t see any already popular actors being drawn to ‘Enter zombie king’. However, had zombie king attempted to find a cast with talent (which isn’t really that hard to do with the amount of aspiring actors out there looking for ANY chance) it perhaps could have been a step up from unbearable. But it wasn’t.

With both movies working on a low budget and knowing their limits, the ‘Brick’ crew managed to adapt and succeed by choosing everyday locations, sets and costumes, deciding to spend their money on talent and necessary extras. However zombie king seemed to ‘indulge’ in blood for gore scenes and useless extras for the background.

Both movies used a completely different shooting style, with ‘Brick’ choosing to use a crew willing to experiment with angles and scene placements, and zombie king opting to go with the home video style of filming, allowing the crew to skip experimentation and stay with the easy shot. The costumes chosen for ‘Brick’ are perfect for each character, well thought out on the part of the wardrobe department, however in zombie king, wardrobe didn’t think very far past the masks – and what an idea that was. Apart from the fact that the masks made the whole film even more completely unrealistic, it made filming the show even harder as there were no facial expressions to assist the audience in understanding what was happening.

The dialogue from both films are completely different, with ‘Brick’ opting for an interesting take on a high school detective movie that perhaps had potential to sound corny had the actors not performed as well as they did. However Zombie King had a poorly written script made worse by terrible acting. Overall, ‘Brick’ has been successful in their attempt to make a decent movie, however ‘Enter Zombie King’ failed miserably in all ways.
